About The Test

About to take the Life in the UK test? You’re in the right place. We’ll walk you through who needs to take it, what’s included, and how to make sure you’re ready on test day.

If you’re applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain or British Citizenship, you’ll almost certainly need to take this test.

There are a few exceptions though – you can skip it if you’re:

  • aged under 18 or over 65,
  • if you’ve already passed it before
  • if you have a chronic physical or mental condition that would make taking the test unreasonable.

You’ll get 24 multiple choice questions and need to get at least 18 correct to pass (that’s 75%). You’ve got 45 minutes to finish, which gives you plenty of time to think through your answers.

Everything’s done on a computer at the test center. Around 30% fail the test on their first attempt, so you’ll definitely want to make sure you’re well prepared before you sit it. (Our guide will ensure you’ll pass!)

You must book online at the official booking website: www.lituktestbooking.co.uk.

Just register for an account first – you’ll need a valid email address to do this.

There are test centres spread around the UK, so you’ll be able to pick a venue that is nearest to you. It costs £50 to book a test. If you’re in a hurry, you can also book a slot at short notice for around £65. This isn’t necessary unless you need it urgently – most applicants should only be paying £50 for the test.

Need help with booking? Call the official helpline on 0800 015 4245 for advice (Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm).
